Chiropractic Care and Children

Over the years, chiropractic care has expanded to include people of all ages. Children especially are regularly brought in for sessions by their parents as a means to ensure that they stay healthy. Growing children need the best protection for diseases and other ailments since this will lay the foundations for their future health. Chiropractic care, with it’s holistic approach to health, helps children build up essential aspects of their body like their immune system without drugs or any invasive procedures.

How Chiropractic care helps children

Preventive chiropractic care is meant to improve general health instead of specific conditions. This means that in case of sickness, it must be complimented with regular traditional health care. However, chiropractic sessions help reduce the amount of time your child will be ill and will also ease the stress of harmful drugs that are ingested during this time.

Chiropractic treatment focuses on the phenomena of subluxation that is crucial to the practice of chiropractic care. Subluxation involves the compression or stress of a spinal nerve that interferes with the proper functioning of the body. Since the entire spinal and muscular apparatus of the body is one coherent system, an improvement in the central spinal apparatus leads to a greater overall benefit to the body.

Dealing with External disturbances

We all have a natural defense system in our bodies. These systems are meant to defend us from a number of external stimuli such as allergic substances including pollen, germs, and even climate. When these natural defense are compromised, people – and especially children – fall sick more easily. Chiropractic care aims to strengthen these natural defenses, thereby allowing your child’s body to fight off dangerous stimuli by himself or herself, making the defenses even stronger in the process.

Subluxation can be caused due to a variety of reasons – some of them internal, and others external. For example, stress due to school and worry about exams can cause an improper functioning of the spinal nerves. It can also be caused by traumatic events that affect the head, neck or back. While healing might be superficial, it’s possible that the remnants of the injury are stamped on the spinal nervous system.

Chiropractic Analysis detects these problems through a variety of techniques and attempts to correct them through direct manipulation of the spine. Pinched nerves and other conditions can be relieved by the gentle application of pressure in the correct way using painless and non surgical means.

Summary

Chiropractic care for children can therefore be an integral part of their health program alongside regular traditional checkups. After all, you owe it to your child to leave no stone unturned when it comes to their health.

Chiropractic treatments for Pain

Chiropractic treatments revolve around ensuring the integrity of the spine. Under the chiropractic system of thought, many ailments and problems arise from the incorrect positioning of the spinal columns. Diseases and several other symptoms that people face day in and day out have their basic roots in the spinal cord not being properly maintained. This school of thought traces itself way back to Hippocrates and other scientists who painstakingly uncovered the secrets of holistic health.

In the modern day, Chiropractors apply themselves to the manipulation of the spine for several ailments. This non invasive and drug free method has resulted in innumerable patients being able to live pain free lives.

The basics of Spinal Manipulation

To understand spinal manipulation, it is first necessary to grasp the concept of a vertical subluxation. This is a physiological misalignment of the spinal segments where the joints are not in their proper place. Spinal manipulations aim to correct these imbalances and restore the harmony and integrity of the spine. There are many different kinds of spinal conditions, each of which necessitate a different type of manipulation.

Spinal manipulation is more of an art than other treatments as a great deal depends on the skill of the Chiropractor. Spinal manipulation can be performed under many conditions. One of these is under anesthesia.

Manipulation under anesthesia (MUA)

Three types of anesthesia are used for this purpose. General anesthesia makes the patient go completely unconscious without being aware of what is happening. Sometimes this is not necessary and all that is required is a mild sedation. Yet in other cases, only specific sections will need to be anesthetized by the chiropractor. It is a well understood and practiced medical technique with a CPT code of 22505.

One particularly effective use for MUA is for the breaking up scar tissue that might have formed around the spinal joints. Such fibrous material can easily escape an X-Ray examination can can cause many problems. Patients almost always opt for Manipulation under anesthesia when conventional treatments have been tried and have not yielded any results.

Before engaging in MUA treatments, patients are required to undergo thorough testing in order to rule out other causes for the pain. Sonograms, MRI scans or CT scans may be necessary to ensure that the correct treatment is being given. Most chiropractors have these services in house in order to speed up the process.

Summary

Manipulation under anesthesia is an essential tenet of Chiropractic technique. Its fundamental nature has led it to becoming extremely common and it is only recently that the public has begun to widely appreciate its benefits.

Sunrise Spinal Decompression has been the defining feature of the Burch Spinal Decompression Center. Making use of the latest technology and the newest models of fitness, Dr. Larry Burch is the chief architect of it’s success.

Dr. Burch is a strong believer in improving the overall health of the patient with a holistic approach untarnished by the specter of drugs which have degenerated the health landscape of this country. In order to achieve this, he practices the most advanced and safe procedures to relive back pain due to:

Sciatica

Herniated Disks

Facet Syndrome, and

Bulging Disks

Even neck or back pain due to unspecified conditions are treated after a thorough evaluation. In fact, the first step in treatment is a complete and holistic checkup examining various facets of the patient’s life including their physical activity and medical history. Advances in science have now allowed chiropractors to improve their understanding of how the body works and how to better appreciate the way in which the body attempts to warn us of problems using pain as a medium.

Dr. Burch’s experience in the field is most impressive. Certified in practices ranging from Radiographic Procedures to Acupuncture, he started his chiropractic training in 1958 and has been an active participant in all fields relating to his practice. He has been a pioneer in the new “Wellness Revolution” that is sweeping the country and his contributions include servicing the Florida community since 1963.

For those who are still suffering from pain even afer surgery, Sunrise Spinal Decompression can help provide relief after just a few sessions. Walk into our office to learn more!

A Case Study:

A 56 year old Caucasian female presented to my office with moderate chronic lower back pain which began 20 years ago with no known onset of injury. Her ADL’s included difficulty turning bending, sleeping, walking and sitting for prolonged periods of time. Examination revealed shortening of the hamstrings, piriformis and erector spinae muscles bilaterally and restricted ROM in the thoracolumbar region. The pain was rated as an 8/10 on the VAS in the lumbar region. LE DTR’s and dermatomes are WNL. The pain has progressively become worse in the last 2 years and she is tired of the pain.

Diagnostic Studies: A lumbar MRI w/o contrast was ordered and revealed a disc herniation at T11-T12, T12-L1, L1-L2 and disc bulging at L3-L4 and L4-L5.

Recommended course of treatment: 3 consecutive days of Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) followed by a 6 week intensive physical therapy program.

Conclusion: After receiving 3 consecutive days of MUA performed at an outpatient surgical center, the patient noticed a 65% improvement of her symptoms. She can now resume her ADL’s without difficulty which include household chores and sleep through the night without waking due to pain. Her ROM is full in the thoracolumbar spine. Her pain is rated a 3/10 on the VAS. The patient is excited to resume her normal ADL’s with full function and without a dependency on invasive measures.
